Do you feel like something is holding you back from discipleship? Very few women ever feel like they are ready to disciple. No one feels holy enough. No one feels smart enough. No one feels energetic enough. No one feels wise enough. But that’s not what discipleship is about. None of us have what it takes to do this perfectly, but the good news is that we’re not supposed to do it perfectly. Instead, we get to rely on the work of the Holy Spirit in us to give us everything we need for discipleship.
Discipleship requires being honest about our need for God. It’s about pointing others to the only One who is big enough to handle our hopes, dreams, fears, and failures. It involves entering into the lives of other women, so they can see Jesus in your interactions (Titus 2:3–5), hear Jesus in your stories (Deuteronomy 6:7), and sense Jesus in your presence (2 Corinthians 2:15). Discipleship is also not about making mini versions of yourself (praise God!) or mini versions of some ideal Christian woman. Instead, it involves helping others understand who they are in Christ, so that they can live out God’s calling on their lives. Paul said, “Imitate me as I imitate Christ” (1 Corinthians 11:1). The point is not the imitation of us; the point is to show that Jesus Christ is worth imitating.
Can you do this? If you are indwelled by the Holy Spirit and empowered by the living God, then the clear answer is that you already have what it takes. All you have to do is say yes to living out God’s call on your life.
We are so excited to share this lesson from Annie F. Downs with you this month so that you can learn practically what it looks like to disciple someone else, and be discipled, in your everyday life.
