Let’s talk about the word peace. What does it even mean? While we might know what the word itself means, how often do we feel at peace? We attempt to find peace amid the chaos, but it seems to be elusive most days. In the chaos of work, kids, family, friends, responsibilities, heartache, disappointment, tragedies, and a broken self and world, where and how do we find peace?

In Greek, peace means wholeness, tranquility, harmony, and security. To this definition, the biblical approach adds that salvation through Jesus leads to peace. A soul is at peace resting in the truth of being saved by God and knowing its final destination is heaven. Followers of Christ have constant access to peace because of the truth of salvation through Jesus. Even in the midst of great chaos.

As Isaiah foretold of the birth of Christ, he gave Him several names: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace. Jesus is the source and provider of peace. He is in charge of peace. He rules with peace. He reigns over peace and distributes it. He is our peace now and forever. Because we have access to Jesus through the Spirit, we can tap into His peace each and every day.

In John 14:27, Jesus declares that He leaves us with peace and gives us His peace. And then, He makes a very clear distinction: His peace is different than the world’s. What does He mean by this? How does the world attempt to give us peace? In what ways do we look to the world to find peace? Possibly through relationships, social media, entertainment, food, rest, planning for the future, striving for wealth, a job, a vacation, and so on. Remember, none of these things are bad in and of themselves; however, anything other than Jesus ultimately fails to provide peace. Why? Because He is the Source of peace.

The world’s attempt to offer peace is not good enough. Worldly things might satisfy in the moment, but we end up back where we started—longing for peace. The peace the world provides is temporary and fleeting. The peace Jesus provides is sufficient and everlasting. And, because of the peace of Jesus, our hearts can be free of trouble and fear.

Philippians 4 reminds us how to find the peace of God on a daily basis—by taking all things to Him in prayer. Share all your needs, desires, and worries with your God who loves and cares for you and is sovereign over all. Thank God for all He has done, all He is doing, and all He will do. The practice of gratefulness reminds us of God’s faithfulness. These things lead to the peace of God, which is beyond our comprehension because it is so good it doesn’t even make sense. The peace of Jesus is greater than any chaos or trial you may experience because of its guarding power.

As we continue to wait for Christ to return and to restore peace forevermore, we can rest in the peace He provides us now. A peace that comes from our salvation and being right with God. A peace that is sufficient and lasting. A peace so good it cannot be understood. A peace that guards our hearts and minds.
