The Beauty in Coming Together, Meet the 2 New Esther Home Girls

We launched a campaign over the summer to raise support for two Rwandan women to attend college at the Esther Home, a program of Africa New Life Ministries. A college education in Rwanda makes the cycle of poverty history. Yet, university is prohibitively expensive for the children that Africa New Life serves. For young women, college is key to reversing the cycle of poverty, giving them a boost to become leaders in Rwanda. The Esther Home program provides college education for exceptional young women who demonstrate Christian character, leadership and academic rigor. These women are genocide survivors, orphans, and the poorest of the poor.

The challenge

Originally, we set out to overwhelm these two-women and pay for everything that they need to live in the Esther Home and attend college debt-free for 4 years. The goal to do that was $48,000.

We are so excited and overwhelmed to report that 1,231 women generously gave over $60,000. Together, we were able to fully support Mukashyaka Scovia and Tuyisenge Beatrice for a four-year education through the Ester Home program.

Meet the girls

Mukashyaka Scovia is 21 years old and one of eight children in her family. Scovia was raised in a Christian home, and although both parents work, they struggle to provide for their large family. Through sponsorship, Scovia is able to attend the University of Rwanda’s School of Finance and Banking where she plans to pursue a degree in Logistics and Procurement. As a developing country, Rwanda’s infrastructures and procedures are behind, so Scovia hopes to use her degree to help improve them further. Ten years from now, she hopes to be an international entrepreneur with her own consulting firm so she can help other Rwandans develop their business projects and change their standard of living.

Tuyisenge Beatrice is 19 years old and the youngest of seven children in her family. Both of her parents are too old to work, so her family relies on her older sister to work and provide for their basic needs. Not only did her sponsorship give her an opportunity to attend school, it also led her to finding Christ. Beatrice plans on attending Kigali Institute of Science and Technology where she hopes to earn her degree in Clinical Medicine to become a doctor. Ten years from now she hopes to be married with children and caring for the sick, wounded, and broken as a doctor.
